5 Myths About Electronic Recycling That You Believe

5 Myths About Electronic Recycling That You Believe

Myth 1: All electronic waste is properly recycled

A common misconception is to believe that all electronic waste collection results in proper recycling. In Brazil, despite regulatory advances such as the National Solid Waste Policy (Law No. 12.305/2010), a large part of disposal still occurs irregularly. According to data from the National Information System on Solid Waste Management (SINIR), the infrastructure for electronic recycling still faces challenges, which compromises environmentally appropriate final disposal.

Myth 2: Recycling electronics brings no economic benefits

Contrary to this myth, electronic recycling is a significant source of recovery of precious metals such as gold, silver, and copper. According to CETESB (CETESB), recovering these materials reduces mineral extraction, which has a positive environmental and economic impact. Furthermore, the recycling market generates jobs and stimulates the waste chain, promoting sustainable development.

Myth 3: Discarding HDDs and common media without security is enough

Many believe that simply discarding storage devices is safe. However, secure disposal of HDDs and media is essential to ensure the protection of sensitive data. Technical standards recommended by institutions such as NIST (NIST) guide methods for sanitization and physical destruction of these devices, preventing legal and information security risks.

Myth 4: Recycling electronics does not help reduce environmental impact

Beyond the impact on raw material extraction, recycling reduces the volume of toxic waste in the environment. The National Solid Waste Policy highlights the importance of reverse logistics for electronics, minimizing soil and water contamination. Continued recycling ensures compliance with legal guidelines, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Myth 5: Any disposal point accepts all types of electronics

There is a clear differentiation depending on the type of electronic device discarded. Some devices require specific treatment according to regulations from the National Information System on Solid Waste Management and current technical standards. Therefore, it is essential to use certified points for electronic disposal, ensuring the correct destination of waste.

ManifestTransparency & Security Manifesto

Evidence and transparency: Our ESG approach is built on traceable documentation, verifiable records and auditable operational criteria. We turn electronic waste management into operational evidence to support governance, traceability and the mitigation of environmental, documentary and corporate risks. Documentary security and compliance: Documented traceability helps reduce regulatory exposure, strengthens documentary defensibility and supports alignment with applicable environmental policies, corporate contracts and governance requirements, including national and international references relevant to supply chains. Operational costing of reverse logistics: Door-to-door collection and responsible processing of electronic waste involve relevant logistics, technical and documentary costs. For this reason, Ecobraz structures transparent operational costing models linked to reverse logistics execution, with no promise of financial return, investment or asset appreciation. Governance: Operational execution is guided by compliance, traceability and verifiable documentation criteria. The priority is to strengthen the client’s corporate evidence, reduce documentary gaps and support safer, more responsible and defensible disposal decisions.
