Improper Disposal and Data Leakage: The Forgotten Link in Information Security

Improper Disposal and Data Leakage: The Forgotten Link in Information Security

Introduction

The improper disposal of electronic devices composed of storage media represents a critical risk still neglected in information security. Data exposure through poorly managed electronic waste can cause sensitive leaks, negatively impacting regulatory compliance and information integrity.

Risks of Improper Disposal in Information Security

Devices such as hard drives, solid-state drives, and removable media store data that, if discarded without secure procedures, become potential sources of leaks. The absence of technical protocols for the proper destruction or sanitization of these media contradicts the best practices recommended by the NIST Special Publication 800-88 Revision 1, which establishes international guidelines for secure data disposal.

Legislation and Regulations Governing Security in Disposal

According to Law No. 13,709/2018 (General Data Protection Law - LGPD) on Planalto.gov.br, the proper processing of personal data includes protection against unauthorized access, which encompasses the disposal stage. Additionally, the resolutions of the National System of Information on Solid Waste (SINIR) provide guidance on the management of technological waste.

Moreover, state environmental regulations such as those from CETESB impose criteria for the treatment and disposal of electronic waste, reducing environmental risks and breaches of confidentiality.

Recommended Procedures for Mitigating Data Leakage in Electronic Waste

The adoption of formal e-waste collection processes is essential for controlling the flow of discarded assets. Structured management prevents equipment loss and ensures proper disposal by certified recyclers.

For devices containing sensitive information, validated media sanitization techniques must be adopted. Secure disposal of hard drives and other media includes methods such as physical destruction, degaussing, and overwriting, as specified by NIST.

Conclusion

The link between improper disposal and data leakage is often overlooked in information security. Legal compliance and technical requirements point to the urgent need for robust device disposal and sanitization policies, significantly reducing risks of data exposure and ensuring environmental and regulatory sustainability.
