Logistics for collecting wire and cable scrap from industrial plants

The logistics of collecting wire and cable scrap from industrial plants must follow specific rules to ensure safety, environmental compliance and operational efficiency. Correct segregation, temporary storage and transportation are essential for the sustainable management of this waste, as provided for in Law No. 13,826/2019 and the National Solid Waste Policy (Lei nº 12.305/2010).

Planning collection and segregation at source

The first step is to identify the points that generate wire and cable scrap in the industrial plant, ensuring proper segregation to avoid cross-contamination with other waste. ABNT standard NBR 10.004 provides guidance on classifying waste according to its hazardousness, and many wires and cables may contain materials that require differentiated treatment.

Temporary storage in accordance with regulations

Storage must take place in a covered, signposted place with easy access for transportation, preventing the risk of accidents and environmental contamination. According to the National Solid Waste Policy, temporary storage must not exceed defined time limits in order to avoid undue accumulation.

Suitable transportation to licensed recipients

The transportation of scrap wires and cables must be carried out by licensed vehicles and must comply with current environmental regulations. Shared responsibility is provided for in article 33 of Law No. 12.305/2010, where the generator must ensure proper delivery to authorized recyclers or processors.

Compliance and document control

It is essential to keep records of the waste chain of custody, including invoices, electronic waste manifests (MTR) available at mtr.sinir.gov.br, and proof of final destination to comply with legal requirements and audits.

Integration with e-waste management

When collecting electronic components such as cables, there may be associated e-waste, recommending integration with electronic waste collection to optimize reuse and recycling according to the guidelines of the appropriate scheduling.

Safe disposal of media with magnetic storage

When there is a need to dispose of hard drives or other magnetic media present in systems, the procedure must follow protocols of safe disposal and sanitization of hard drives, guaranteeing confidentiality of information and legal compliance.

Environmental aspects and occupational risks

Inadequate handling of scrap wires and cables can lead to contamination by heavy metals and insulating materials, as well as physical risks to operators. Complying with technical environmental and occupational safety standards is crucial to mitigating these risks.
