Classification of IT Waste

Information technology waste includes electronic equipment such as computers, laptops, servers, monitors, keyboards, mice, and storage devices. Classification must follow the guidelines of the National Information System on Solid Waste Management (SINIR), according to Law No. 14,025/2020. These are classified as electronic waste, which contain potentially hazardous components that require special attention in handling and disposal.

Proper Storage

Storage should take place in a covered, ventilated, signposted area, separated from common waste to avoid cross-contamination. Handling and packaging must comply with the Solid Waste Management regulations to ensure physical integrity and prevent environmental risks. Equipment must be organized and labeled according to their condition: for reuse, recycling, or disposal.

Proper Disposal and Applicable Legislation

The disposal of electronic devices must follow the current legislation governing the handling of electronic waste. Improper disposal causes environmental impact and violates legal standards. For disposal of secure digital storage, such as hard drives, specialized hard drive sanitization procedures are recommended to ensure data elimination and privacy preservation.

Collection and Reverse Logistics

The use of specialized electronic waste collection is recommended, ensuring regulated transportation and forwarding for recycling or environmentally responsible disposal, in accordance with the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS – Law No. 12,305/2010). Reverse logistics integrates the sustainable cycle of equipment, minimizing waste and pollutant emissions.

Importance of Technical Compliance

Compliance with the technical standards of the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO) and the standards of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) contributes to secure and auditable processes, especially related to information security and environmental protection.
