The economic value of e-waste: precious metals and raw materials

Electronic waste contains precious metals and valuable raw materials which, when properly recovered, provide significant economic value. Recycling contributes to sustainability, reduces environmental impacts and complies with current legislation, such as Law No. 12.305/2010 (National Solid Waste Policy).

Precious metals present in e-waste

Discarded electronic devices contain metals such as gold, silver, palladium and copper in quantities that, when accumulated, represent considerable value. Gold is used in connectors and circuits due to its high electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion, while copper, present in wires and boards, is essential for equipment to function.

The importance of recovering raw materials

In addition to precious metals, e-waste contains engineering plastics, aluminum, iron and other materials that, if recovered, reduce the extraction of natural resources. This practice contributes to environmental conservation and the circular economy, minimizing waste sent to landfills.

Brazilian legislation and responsibility in e-waste management

The proper management of e-waste is regulated mainly by Law No. 12.305/2010, which institutes the National Solid Waste Policy, establishing guidelines for reverse logistics and the sustainable production chain. In addition, specific rules imposed by the National Solid Waste Management Information System (SINIR) regulate the registration and monitoring of generators and recyclers.

Recommended practices for safe and sustainable disposal

For the proper disposal of equipment and media containing sensitive data, it is recommended to use the services of sanitization of hard drives and electronic media, guaranteeing information protection and legal compliance. For the correct disposal of other electronic equipment, it is essential to schedule the collection of electronic waste by specialized entities, providing suitable collection points to guarantee the correct reuse of the materials. To make an appointment, visit electronic waste collection.

Economic and environmental benefits of recycling

The recovery of precious metals and raw materials reduces dependence on imported primary resources, reducing costs and risks associated with supply. Environmentally, recycling reduces soil, water and air pollution, as well as avoiding the use of excessive energy in mineral extraction. This is in line with public policies that encourage sustainable practices and the development of an efficient circular economy in Brazil.
