The Logistical Nightmare: Lead, Mercury and the Risk of Contamination
The scale of electronic waste in Brazil is measured in millions of tonnes. According to data from the UN and SINIR, the country generates around 2.2 million tonnes of e-waste each year, and most of that volume never reaches the correct destination. For a collection agent, however, volume is not the only problem. Some materials, because of their inherent risk, raise the whole reverse-logistics chain to the level of an environmental emergency. Monitors and televisions, especially older cathode-ray tube (CRT) models and the first liquid-crystal display (LCD) units, embody that threat. They are a concentrate of toxicity that ordinary logistics cannot, and should not, handle.
The Logistical Nightmare: Lead, Mercury and the Risk of Contamination
As someone who deals with e-waste collection every day, I notice that monitors are often the items organisations find hardest to dispose of. The reason is simple: the scrap value they contain is negligible next to the cost of treating their hazardous components. The most dangerous e-waste is also the e-waste that is least economically viable for the ordinary cycle.
Lead in the Glass: The Toxic Legacy of CRT Monitors
Cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitors are a legacy of toxicity. The glass of the funnel and the front panel of these devices is not ordinary glass; it was manufactured with added lead (Pb). A single unit can contain up to 3 kg of lead. This heavy metal is a potent neurotoxin, especially dangerous for children and for human development.
The presence of lead in these monitors was technologically necessary to block the X-rays generated by the operation of the tube. Today, the obsolescence of these monitors has turned a technological solution into a serious environmental problem. When a CRT monitor is discarded in open dumps or ordinary landfills (which Law No. 12,305, the PNRS, prohibits), the glass breaks. The action of rain and time releases the lead, which mixes with leachate and inexorably reaches the water table, contaminating drinking water for decades.
CETESB and environmental agencies across Brazil issue continual warnings about the risk of lead. Ensuring that this material never reaches landfill is the front line of environmental protection.
Mercury: The Invisible Threat in Flat Screens (LCD)
The flat-screen (LCD) monitors that replaced CRTs brought a different but equally serious risk: mercury (Hg). Many LCD models use small backlight lamps, known as CCFLs (cold-cathode fluorescent lamps), which contain small quantities of mercury. Although the amount per unit is small, the volume of monitors discarded nationally is colossal.
Mercury is a neurotoxin that, if released into the atmosphere (through incineration or improper breakage), is easily absorbed by living organisms and accumulates in the food chain. For reverse logistics, this means that even the collection and transport of an LCD monitor must be treated as a high chemical-risk operation.
IPEA (the Institute for Applied Economic Research) and other sustainability research institutions stress that the proper management of heavy metals is the greatest environmental challenge in reverse logistics. The risk lies not in selling scrap, but in managing the toxic residue.
Containment Logistics: Ecobraz's Role in Managing the Risk

The dismantling of monitors, which requires containment rooms, negative pressure and gas-distillation technology, is not carried out at our sorting centres. That stage is the most expensive link in the chain.

- Specialist routing: the material is sent directly to plants and industrial partners that hold the certifications and technology required for dismantling. Our partners are responsible for separating the leaded glass, isolating the mercury and recovering the plastic and other metals.
- The cost is unavoidable: because of the very high complexity and cost of final treatment, which is not covered by the negligible scrap value (and may involve a charge for CRT models), our management is essential to make this stage possible. The cost is the price of environmental safety.
Governance and Compliance: The "G" in ESG
For any organisation, disposing of monitors is not a matter of choice but of compliance. The PNRS and state environmental legislation (such as CETESB's rules in Sao Paulo) require the final destination of hazardous waste to be evidenced. The risk of fines and reputational damage is considerable.
We provide the Certificate of Final Disposal (CDF), a document issued within the scope of the service that records that the high-risk residue was diverted from landfill and entered the industrial route for safe treatment.
