The cinematograph, created by the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière in 1895, marked the birth of cinema as both art and technology. By turning still images into movement, the invention redefined visual communication and gave rise to modern entertainment.

The Lumière Cinematograph is a cinematographic camera and projector developed in 1895 by the French brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière. Unlike earlier devices, which were only cameras or only projectors, the cinematograph combined all three functions — filming, printing and projection — in a single portable piece of equipment. This ingenious design made it the first complete cinema system.

Built from wood and metal, the cinematograph used a hand crank to move the perforated 35 mm film in front of the projection lamp. The light passed through the film and then through an objective lens, projecting the images onto a white screen. Each second of playback contained 16 frames, creating the illusion of continuous movement. The system was so efficient that it remained the technical basis of cinema for more than half a century.

The cinematograph was created in 1895 by the brothers Auguste Lumière (1862–1954) and Louis Lumière (1864–1948), sons of a photographic plate manufacturer in Lyon, France. Influenced by the experiments of Étienne-Jules Marey and Thomas Edison, the Lumières perfected the intermittent film-advance mechanism, which allowed brief pauses between frames without burning the film.

On 28 December 1895, at the Grand Café on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris, the first paid public screening in the history of cinema took place. The event presented ten short films, among them “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory” and “The Arrival of a Train at a Station”. Its success was immediate and worldwide, marking the official birth of the seventh art.

The cinematograph was a multifunctional machine: it recorded, printed and projected moving images. When operated as a camera, it captured the light reflected by objects onto photosensitive 35 mm film. When connected to a light source — originally an electric arc lamp — it acted as a projector, casting the images onto the screen.

This versatility made the cinematograph a revolutionary tool for photographers, scientists and artists. It turned the recording of time and space into a public spectacle, establishing the technical and aesthetic foundations of contemporary audiovisual media.

In its early years, the cinematograph was operated by hand by camera operators and projectionists trained by the Lumières themselves. The operator turned the crank to move the film and adjusted the focus and lighting. Every screening demanded technical mastery and precise control of speed — a genuine artistic craft.

Travelling screenings carried cinema all over the world. In 1896 the cinematograph reached Brazil, with screenings in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo that delighted audiences and inaugurated the country's own filmmaking. The invention inspired experiments in documentation, journalism and fiction — transforming the way humans perceived reality.

The cinematograph was made up of a frame of carved wood and metal parts of brass and polished steel. It used optical glass lenses, precision gears and a side crank. The 35 mm film, based on cellulose nitrate, was flammable and required extreme care during projection. The electric arc lamp, positioned behind the film, produced an intense light that passed through the images to project them onto the screen.

The equipment's finish reflected the artisanal care typical of French engineering of the period. Each cinematograph was numbered and assembled by hand, with optical adjustments made individually by technicians at the Lumière company.

The Lumières' cinematograph gave rise to a new language: that of time in motion. For the first time, it was possible to record and display human actions, landscapes and events with dynamic realism. The collective experience of the screening created a new kind of art — cinema — that brought together science, industry and imagination.

Its cultural impact was immediate. The first moving images inspired artists, journalists and scientists. Cinema went on to document wars, journeys and social change, becoming one of the main tools of communication and expression of the twentieth century. The Lumières' invention gave rise not only to a new medium, but to a new way of seeing the world.

The cellulose nitrate films used in the first decades of cinema are highly flammable and toxic. Their improper disposal releases harmful gases and chemical residues into the environment. In addition, old projectors contain heavy metals and alloys with lead and copper, which can contaminate the soil.

For this reason, the treatment of obsolete cinematographic equipment requires specialised recycling. Today, museums and restoration centres follow environmental protocols for conservation and safe disposal, helping to preserve audiovisual heritage without ecological risk.

The cinematograph is the direct ancestor of all modern cameras and projectors. Its principle of intermittent capture and projection of images is still used today in digital cameras and contemporary cinema projectors. The 35 mm system created by the Lumières became the worldwide standard for more than a century.

The legacy of the Lumière brothers goes beyond the technical field: they founded a new universal language. Through light and movement, cinema came to narrate the history of humanity, uniting cultures and crossing borders. The cinematograph is therefore the starting point of global audiovisual culture.
