Launched in 1990, the Neo Geo AES broke every rule. While the competition tried to bring an experience "similar" to the arcade into the home, SNK put the actual arcade hardware inside a home console. There was no "port" or drop in quality; it was the same chip, the same code, the same game. The cost of this was astronomical, both financially for the consumer and materially for manufacturing.

For Ecobraz, the Neo Geo represents "high-end e-waste". Its components are of superior industrial quality, designed to endure in smoky arcades (the MVS version), yet housed in luxury domestic casings. Managing these assets is not about destructive recycling, but about high-value preservation, because each unit is dense in precious materials.

The Neo Geo cartridges are the largest in the history of home consoles. They are the size of a VHS tape.

Inside each cartridge there is not just one printed circuit board (PCB). There are two interconnected PCBs:

  • PROG board: Contains the program and sound data (Mask ROM chips).
  • CHA board: Contains the graphics data (sprites and textures).

Material impact: A Neo Geo game such as Metal Slug 3 holds 708 Megabits of data. This required dozens of soldered memory chips. The volume of silicon, lead solder, fibreglass and ABS plastic in a single cartridge is equivalent to 10 Super Nintendo cartridges. Recycling a batch of Neo Geo games means processing a significant amount of industrial hardware.

The Neo Geo was the first console to let a player save a game in the arcade and continue it at home, using a Memory Card.

PCMCIA/JEIDA technology:
The card followed the JEIDA 3.0 standard (the precursor to PCMCIA). Internally it used volatile SRAM memory powered by a CR2016 lithium battery.
Leakage risk: After 30 years, these batteries (often not user-replaceable without opening the card) have failed. Although coin-cell lithium leaks less than alkaline cells, leakage still damages the card's fine contacts. Ecobraz recovers these cards by cleaning the gold contacts and replacing the battery, restoring their historical function.

The AES standard controller was not a small gamepad, but a robust tabletop "arcade stick".

Industrial durability:
Unlike the "mushy" rubber controllers of the competition, SNK used real microswitches (mechanical clicks) for the directional and the buttons. These switches are made of engineering plastic, steel springs and gold/silver contacts.
They are extremely durable (millions of cycles) and easy to repair. In waste management, a broken Neo Geo controller can almost always be fixed by swapping a standard industrial switch, unlike membrane controllers that become rubbish once the rubber tears.

To guarantee arcade-perfect fidelity, the Neo Geo uses two processors working together:

  • Main: Motorola 68000 at 12 MHz (50% faster than the Mega Drive's).
  • Sound/co-processor: Zilog Z80A at 4 MHz.

This classic combination is the "gold standard" of the 1990s. The presence of a Yamaha YM2610 sound chip (FM synthesis) adds recovery value. Unrepairable Neo Geo boards are rich sources of chips for repairing pinball machines and other arcades of the same era.

Neo Geo marketing claimed "MAX 330 MEGA - PRO GEAR SPEC" and "24-Bit". Technically, it was a 16-bit system. The "24-bit" referred to the width of the GPU data bus to the graphics memory, a genuine innovation for moving giant sprites.

The Neo Geo AES casing is made of a very high-quality textured black ABS. Unlike the grey plastics that yellow, the AES black generally remains chemically and aesthetically stable.

This makes aesthetic reuse easier. A simple polish restores the original shine. However, the golden "NEO GEO" logo stamped on the top is a metallic paint that can complicate pure recycling of the polymer if the casing is shredded.

There are different revisions of the AES motherboard (PRO-POW, PRO-POW2, etc.). Some require 5V power supplies, others 9V (or 10V), and the polarity changes.

Burnout risk:
Using the wrong supply (e.g. a 9V supply on a 5V console) burns out the voltage regulator and, worse, can damage the video and sound RAM chips. When sorting batches of Neo Geo units, checking the serial number on the bottom label is crucial for pairing the correct supply and not destroying a valuable collector's item.

The Neo Geo AES proves that industrial quality carries a high initial environmental cost (a lot of material, a lot of plastic, a lot of silicon), but results in superior longevity.

For Ecobraz, recycling a Neo Geo is almost a financial sacrilege. The focus should be on maintenance, replacing capacitors and memory batteries, and preserving these "monuments of silicon" that represent the peak of the 2D era.
