Between 1972 and 1974, Brazil created one of the most recognisable symbols of public communication in the world: the “orelhão”. The project, by the architect and designer Chu Ming Silveira (1941–1997), grew out of the need for an item of urban infrastructure that combined functional design, low cost and acoustic protection for public telephones. The invention established the country as a reference point in communications engineering and industrial design.

In the 1970s, Brazil was modernising its telecommunications. The old enclosed telephone booths were expensive, fragile and took up too much space on the pavement. In 1972, the São Paulo Telephone Company (CTB) commissioned a new public-telephone design that would be durable, ergonomic and adaptable to the urban environment.

Chu Ming Silveira, an architect trained at the Mackenzie Presbyterian University, was tasked with conceiving the new equipment. Drawing on principles of acoustic design and spatial efficiency, she designed a light, curved and self-supporting structure, nicknamed the “orelhão” (“big ear”) for its resemblance to the shape of the human ear.

The orelhão consists of a parabolic dome of fibreglass reinforced with polyester resin, designed to reflect the user’s voice towards the microphone and to block external noise. The telephone is fixed inside the structure, protected from rain and vandalism, with the wiring embedded in the metal support post. The hemispherical form provides acoustic comfort and durability at a reduced production cost.

The initial tests were carried out in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, confirming the model’s superior performance in noise isolation, weather resistance and material economy. The design proved so effective that it was exported to more than 20 countries.

More than an industrial product, the orelhão represented a social advance: it democratised access to communication in public spaces. For decades it was the link between families, businesses and entire communities in areas without residential telephones. It became a meeting point, an urban landmark and a symbolic element of the Brazilian landscape.

National production reached hundreds of thousands of units, with regional variations in colour and size. The standard model — a blue fibreglass dome with a black telephone — dominated streets and squares until the early 2000s, when mobile telephony began to replace it.

Chu Ming Silveira, born in Shanghai and a naturalised Brazilian, represented a generation of engineers and architects who used design as a social tool. Her creation combined aesthetics, functionality and durability. The “orelhão” was officially adopted by Telebrás in 1973 and became a national standard, earning design awards and international recognition.

Even decades later, the project is studied in universities and engineering schools as an example of a simple, efficient and sustainable solution. The designer died in 1997, but her legacy remains alive in the streets and in the history of world design.

The orelhão was an early example of sustainable design. Its use of fibreglass ensured a long service life and resistance to corrosion, reducing the need for maintenance and replacement. The structure can be partly recycled: the metal post and support are reusable, and the dome can be shredded and used as aggregate in composite materials.

Compared with the earlier metal booths, the new model reduced the consumption of steel and electrical materials by more than 70%. In addition, the curved form lessened the impact of wind and reduced vandalism, avoiding waste and increasing the average service life to more than 15 years.

Adopting the orelhão brought indirect environmental benefits: energy savings in manufacturing, lower industrial emissions and a longer service life for public equipment. The acoustic design reduced the need for additional insulation, eliminating the use of dense plastics and rubbers that are difficult to recycle. As its use gradually came to an end, companies and municipalities began programmes to reuse the domes in street furniture, children’s playgrounds and artistic projects.

The orelhão is an exemplary case of Brazilian technology applied to the common good. It shows that innovation does not depend solely on electronics or software, but also on intelligent design and urban planning. In an educational context, Chu Ming Silveira’s project is used to teach principles of ergonomics, acoustic efficiency and material sustainability.

The “orelhão” transformed Brazilian communication and public space. Created by a visionary architect, it became an icon of national design and a piece of technological heritage. As well as being functional and beautiful, it is a reminder that true innovation should serve society and respect the environment.
