Transportation to the consignee: which ANTT codes apply to dangerous goods?

Transportation to the consignee: which ANTT codes apply to dangerous goods?

Introduction to the transportation of dangerous cargo

The transportation of dangerous cargo is an activity that requires special attention due to the risks these goods pose. In Brazil, regulations conducted by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) establish a series of standards and codes that must be strictly followed to ensure safety throughout the journey to the destination.

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are substances or products that may pose risks to health, safety, property or the environment during transportation. These can include flammables, explosives, gases, toxic and corrosive substances, among others. Due to these risks, legislation requires specific classifications and procedures for safe transportation.

Applicable ANTT codes for the transportation of dangerous cargo

The ANTT uses a system based on the Special Register for the Transportation of Dangerous Products (RTEPP) and specific codes to identify, control and monitor the transportation of this cargo. Among the main codes that apply are:

  • RTEPP (Special Registration for the Transportation of Dangerous Products): Mandatory for vehicles transporting dangerous cargo. This registration identifies the vehicle and its driver, ensuring that they are qualified and prepared for safe transport.
  • ADN Code (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterways): Despite being a European agreement, some similar regulations are adopted for specific routes and to harmonize procedures in certain territories.
  • RID Code (International Regulations for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Rail): This code applies when transportation involves rail modes, determining technical and operational standards for safe handling.
  • NBR 7500 and NBR 7501: Brazilian technical standards related to the signaling and packaging of dangerous cargo, often referenced by ANTT as complementary to its regulations.
  • UN Classification: Although it is not a specific ANTT code, the UN international classification for dangerous goods is fundamental for land transport regulated by the agency, aiding correct classification and handling.

Requirements for the transportation of dangerous goods

In addition to the codes and registrations, ANTT legislation provides for a series of other requirements to ensure safe transportation:

  • Driver training: Drivers must have specific training for the transportation of dangerous goods, with periodic retraining.
  • Suitable vehicles: The vehicle must be properly equipped and inspected, with safety devices provided for in the standard.
  • Documentation: The documentation accompanying the load must contain precise information such as the nature of the load, quantity, emergency measures and handling instructions.
  • Signage: Transport must have visible, standardized signs indicating the type of load and the risks involved.

Importance of complying with ANTT codes

Respecting ANTT codes when transporting dangerous cargo is not just a legal requirement, but a vital measure to protect lives, property and the environment. Failure to comply can lead to fines, seizure of the cargo and even serious accidents with environmental and social impacts.

Final considerations

Understanding which ANTT codes apply to the transportation to the consignee of dangerous cargo is essential for the safe management of this activity. Compliance with regulations ensures the integrity of operations, minimizes risks and promotes safety in national road traffic.
